‘Investing  to  improve  passenger  service and sustainability’ was the key theme  at  a  special  ‘topping  out’  ceremony to mark the latest phase of development of Stansted’s £40 million terminal extension.

The  project  will  add  an  additional  5,900m2  of  floor  space  in  the international arrivals area and is due to open by the end of June following the completion today of the main structure, roof diagrid and façade glazing stages  of  construction.  The  project  will be fully complete by December 2008.Speaking  at  the ceremony attended by project staff and community leaders, Stewart Wingate, BAA Stansted’s managing director, said:

“I am delighted we have today reached another major milestone in the growth of  Stansted.  Our  exciting plans will transform the terminal building and improve  even further the levels of customer service we provide to the tens of thousands of passengers who pass through Stansted every day.

“Putting  the passenger first is at the heart of everything we do, and this £40 million investment demonstrates the strength of this commitment.

“We   have   also   invested  in  the  latest  technology  to  improve  the environmental  performance  of  the  terminal  and  limit the impact of our operations.  Our  initiative to use biomass boilers burning renewable forms of  fuel  to  generate  hot  water for direct use and heating purposes will reduce   the   terminal’s  carbon  emissions  by  1,824,000  kg  per  year, effectively making the extension project carbon neutral. “My  gratitude  goes  to  the entire project team who have worked extremely hard  driving forward this exciting project and keeping it on track to open as planned later this summer. “We  have  ambitious plans to grow Stansted and give passengers more choice to  travel  to more places than ever before, and we believe this project is an  excellent  example of how this can be achieved in the most sustainable, responsible and customer focussed way possible.”
