Coconut tree climbing, outdoor squash and an indoor rowing competition were among the activities taking place at Stansted this week – all aimed at encouraging airport staff to keep fit and healthy.

The Caribbean themed Health Week, organised by airport owners BAA, saw staff try out a range of sports and activities - and also gave them an opportunity to speak to health care experts on issues ranging from blood pressure levels to skin care and nutrition. Held in a marquee next to the terminal building, the event was opened by pupils from Thorley Hill Primary School.  The school entered a painting competition to decorate the interior and were presented with a donation of £1,000 towards playground equipment from BAA Stansted for their efforts. BAA’s occupational health adviser and event organiser, Mark Newton-Livens, said: “We all spend a considerable amount of time at work and we wanted to get staff away from their day jobs and have some fun. Health Week has helped us show the importance of keeping active and eating a healthy diet – a healthy workforce is a happy workforce! “It’s been a fantastic week and one which was thoroughly enjoyed by everyone. I think we were able to demonstrate that making a few changes to your lifestyle can not only be healthy, it can be enjoyable too.”
